Massachusetts is one of 27 states that charges residents just to own a vehicle. Basically, the tax is $25 for every $1000 of valuation, with other considerations.

"Massachusetts tends to provide more social services and other services and have higher cost than many other states," she said. "So they look for a variety of sources of revenue and more sources of tax revenue than many other states".
It is a state tax, but cities and towns collect it.
Though many think it's used for streets and roads, transportation or other infrastructure, that's actually not the case. The money goes into the general fund, so every municipality can use it however it wants.

This brings up an entirely seerate problem of mismanagement. Look at the DLS site under "Local Reciepts" and you'll see that under Adam our estimated local reciepts have been 20% lower than actual collected. In 2024 this amounted to a littlbe more than $620,000 that the Admministration estimate was low. This effectively increases our available cash to be spent while increasing our actual expenditures beyond our real collections.
A percentage of this local reciepts is no diffefrent than "free cash". It's one time monies all dependant on the spending of taxpayers in any given year.

We have to demand better from our administration. Last year we collected over $620,000 in additional revenue and I'm sure Adam has built in the same slush fund this yearyet he required $430,000 from General Stabilization to balance budget which I call a piss poor budgeting practice.
