  1. It appears that only Gardner has breached the $20.00 number as a bordering town to Templeton.

It is not fair to tell the public that some or most of the towns have a $20.00 tax rate when they do not. People want to be able to trust their town leaders and what they say. Check your facts before you mislead people ! It is only fair.

    2. I understood the chairman’s example of 20.00 when I watched the video of towns surrounding of those who have with the services Templeton currently has. I didn’t take that as comparing towns without say ALS , Senior Center , Recreation , lower property values etc .

  2. You can search here for any towns demographics based here just to get an idea of the towns in Mass demographic makeup. (2010 data federal census) http://www.city-data.com/housing/houses-Templeton-Massachusetts.html

Every town around Templeton has a lower tax rate in 2018 than in 2016. Double whammy for Templeton, rising valuations and rising tax rates.

  4. Can you help me with that statement ? I don’t follow that . Perhaps because they were debt exclusions ? A one time ( until project paid either by tax or grant ) then money falls off the tax ? .... I saw that a lot in templeton in the 1990’s ( DLS MA GOV ) has a user friendly site that allows one to search in great detail.
The state also provides detail on how regional districts are funded . Thankyou

  5. Blogger,

Usually when valuation rise tax rates either stay flatish or can be lowered depending on the increase.

Single family homes in Templeton rose 4.2%. An average $200K valuation riises to $208,400. Now the taxpayer is paying .60 more per thousand in 2018 on the initial $200k and another add of $16.72 per $1000 on the valuation increase of $8,400.

The taxpayers sees an increase of $120.00 plus $140.45 for valuation increase for an total increase of $260.45 in actual taxes paid.Actual taxes paid increased 7.7%.

    1. Yes , thankyou for taking the time Bob . I understand the % increase ( as in 2.5% every year as a levy potential ) everytown I suspect does that ( I think ).
The cents .60 you ref above is the budget proposal made by the TA for consideration. The selectboard in open meeting with finance as the other night ( FIRE and PD ) brought forth their budgets - I heard no push back on either of their budgets by anyone ( as in cutting ).

The Regional School budget has had 1 meeting and has not been fully debated yet correct ? I understand that there is no option as the school will get their request. Too bad the transportation ( both town and voc ) is the largest (?) percentage of the budget or am I wrong ? Thanks

“The tax rate is determined based on the spending of the town meeting or of the city council. If the town meeting spends less, the taxes will probably drop. If they spend more, the taxes will likely go up. Based on the spending, the assessors recommend that the selectmen or the city council set a certain tax rate. The assessors’ primary job is to make sure that the taxes (to support the town’s spending) are fairly allocated to each person and property in the town.” http://realestate.boston.com/buying/2015/02/03/what-you-need-to-know-about-property-taxes-in-massachusetts/

Bob you gave an example of “%4.2 increase on a home 200K now = 208K “
      1. My house tax bill is never what I could get for it if I sold it - if it was over taxed I could ask for an abatement and prove that if again that was the case ( over valued )
      2. As above it’s up to the town tax assessors ofc to correctly year over year access what the taxes are then as above follow the formulary of determining the tax levy per 1000.
3 . Our town officials years ago I feel made an agregous error in not taxing heavy industry appropriately.

    3. Question: Do you feel we need more than one tax rate? Are you saying we should have a commercial rate or some type at a different rate?

    4. Blogger,

Look at the TCTV 2/28/2018 meeting at 50:52. It shows the numbers.

    5. Thanks Bob I watched ( 2/28/18 YouTube ) i looked at 50:52 > I have to be honest I watched all of them 3X as well as the joint town school . I understand the towns $150,000 that has been budgeted by the TA as the towns contribution. I also understand that the school as proposed by DrC is requesting more as a total for the 2 towns to divide up and that is the issue. I also get that it seems Phillipston which is a smaller town less pupils apparently has no issue with their 2.8% share of the school budget request. I hope that as the TA people show up , ask questions , have their material out so people are not wasting time on how the budget is produced by a regional school district.
That issue of how things are funded ( state ) is valid over due and needed . But this current budget is not that time or place for that. Thankyou

Anon 2:02pm Bob , In response to the tax rates yes , I do . That said not a good time now as now the town is desperate for commercial business. I hope that if any “heavy” industry example ; requiring a lot of water and treatment of that water as a result of production. That industry occupying land potentially having need to be remidiated because of contamination . That potential industry also causing if left another potential drag on our tax base as in the past then yes I think the town should take that under advisement.

  6. Is that true about our taxes in the 1990’s if it is I can see perhaps why we are in some of the mess we are in now. It’s not easy doing the hard lifting of acknowledgment of past failures and past mistakes either by omission , error or lack of understanding. However, this to me is not a reason to go backwards by not correcting revenue needs and moving forward.
Each side will have their opportunity to debate and discuss in open meetings and whomever presents the most logical, fact based and economically feasible ( near and long term) plan / argument will be the successful side.
Small d democracy - it only works when people participate. It only works when those who would very much like to participate but are reluctant because of not feeling supported by others publically. It’s hard to stand in a storm without some shelter I guess is what I’m saying here.
