If you wish to work for the Templeton Highway department, you get to keep a few more of your dollars, since you should no longer have to pay an agency fee simply to work.

The Supreme Court finally gave those who wish to work for a municipality a choice, to pay or not to pay to go to work. Of course, here in the commonwealth, the news is reporting that the speaker of the Massachusetts House is going to work to soften the blow to organized labor. The bribe machines most likely have already been fired up.

Seems strange for a person having to pay extra for the right to get a job and go to work. Also, those same people no longer have to pay to help support a politicians campaign expenses, especially if they, as an individual, do not support that person. I would expect the state house here to try and protect their trough containing all that cash that comes from the public sector unions.

  1. The fact is that this SJC 5-4 Janus majority opinion is not about expanding the speech rights of public employees at all Mr Bennett ....It is about five justices constitutionalizing their disdain for the right of working people to come together to speak with a unified and strong voice. State choices about fair-share fees get no deference.

  2. Since you are still free to join a union, I do not see an effort to deny people coming together, however, I do see that the unions or a group of like mined people can no longer force their view on someone who does not share their views and wishes to work. I see it as expanding the rights of the people, to choose which way they wish to go and how to use their money. I guess on that, we disagree.

  3. We disagree on much. These "non-members" are worse than scabs. They are thieves. Because despite the fact that they do not belong to the union and do not pay union dues, the union is legally required to represent and advocate for them and handle their grievances. They get the same wages, hours, workplace conditions, benefits and rights as paying union members and cannot be treated any differently from paying members. In fact, they can even sue the union if the union does not properly represent them.

  4. I’m often “asked “ here “ what have you done for .... “ and “ I don’t see you ..” which is comically ironic as you have no idea who /what I am as Mr Bennett has pointed out again and again ) . Well, I have the need to limit to a great extent - toxic people and situations out of my life for all the reasons one can imagine.
The comments made here by me are a small endeavor to hopefully shed some light instead of heat and ignorance that permeates this blog and unfortunately many of this Towns departments and volunteer committees/boards.

  5. I do not care once iota who you are ! If this was my blog, you would not be given space to air your toxic views without being big enough to us your name. Put that in your hat and take your twisted views somewhere else. If you are the person I think you are, then you have treated the people who come before you in a way you should be ashamed of ! You have joined in to lead this town and it's trusting residents deeper in debt without doing your do diligence to secure funding that would not hurt this town and it's residents for years to come ! If you are not this person, then you have not contributed anything of worth, anyway, so don't let the door hit you on your way out !

  6. I think the thieves would be the people or entity, as in union, who would force someone to pay a fee for something they do not want. How nice, someone who is willing to work for a certain wage but does not wish to contribute to the union / organized labor is now a scab? Or worse, according to justsmartenough. You have to pay us (the union) or you cannot work here, sounds a lot like extortion to me.

    1. Glad you are so clear as to your political views on unions. Makes defining ones arguments exact.

    2. “ justsmartenough” who is that ? Surely not you Mr Bennett

  7. Bev Bart - isn’t the reason this blog was started .. to have no intimidation and forcing people to give personal information and verification of who/what they are ... the hypocrisy. Perhaps that is why Mr Bennett allows me the access to this internet blog.
Those who fight to give freedom of speech. How ironic again that one has freedom of thought but yet fights for freedom of ones speech.
You Bev are the exact person that one should limit if one is to remain centered.

  8. I feel PUBLIC employee unions should be eliminated. Public employees are not a class needing assistance. They have better healthcare and a higher rate of pay/benefits than private parties

  9. I wonder why that is ?

  10. This is why a town should properly fund education ...
Private-sector unionisation began to decline in the 1970s for a reason BOB M - private industry had an incentive to seek a non-unionised labour force and to break union control wherever possible....in order to increase profitability. So the auto and steel industries and wait for it ! FURNITURE imdustries shifted factories to right-to-work states.

    4. BoB M why don’t you explain why you would like to take POLICE and FIRE unions away ? Let’s start there today.

    5. No.............You no longer get answers as you dont debate. You bitch about people and stuff but dont provide any suggestions. You are probably on the BOS.

    6. Well, when you can’t answer that’s your response, weak and ineffective.

    7. What’s your “debate “ BOB M I see none here .. Just your bitching and non answers other than “ I was on a board “ I’m still waiting for your cemented policy’s .

    8. Opening your eyes would be a good start to seeing. The BOS makes policy in our Town since you appear unaware. Are you sure you're not on our BOS because they dont know either? Is the puppeteer working the strings and telling you what to write?

  11. When public employees negotiate against public employees who thinks public employees gain?

  12. I love the fact that people who engage on this page in fact directly and other maybe indirectly benifit to this day from unions. Strange .

  13. If you are Fire Dept EMS or Police dept employee or family memeber of one of those fine people that are always thanked so vociferously with American flags waved at them ... Please remember these comments here by your fellow community members when boards and committees are formed. Thankyou

    1. Why is it we praise public employees like FIRE/EMS and POLICE with parades but we do nothing for employees of WOODS, Doctors, nurses............huh.

    2. Yes people, citizens, those who pay the salaries of those mentioned by "Justsmartenuff" here what I say. I am in direct conflict with attitudes displayed by our BOS members like Diane Haley Brooks who haven't met a School, Fire or Police expense they cannot fully support.

  15. No just an observation.

  16. Again, sure you're not on the BOS? Members tend to be poor at observing issues even when they work with them daily or sign them, or vote on them or hire them...........hmmmmm

  17. During our comments we've determined you dont know the difference between private and public unions. You dont know the BOS makes Policy. You think we under fund the school. That you default to Police/Fire and School to gain public support for your thinking.(Rounding up support shows weakness, insecurity)
When an individual doesn't play your game you throw personal insults.

    Anyone know who this is.............lol

Bob. We praise fire and police because they are first responders. There the first to arrive at any disaster! And others respond after the fact !

  19. Mike, I understand. It was probably a poor example, but my point is we parade public employees. We do it for a purpose as old as civilization.....tax. Im on that older side when we didn't have 911. If you needed an ambulance you called woods. If you had a Fire you called Fire, etc.

My point was to illustrate we dont do this equally. The private ambulance or the Fire ambulance.Private security and public security, The army soldier and the military contractor.

We've been trained to praise "Public Employees" to the point of questioning them makes you a pariah.
