Templeton Tax Rate through the years:

From the Division of Local Services website

Fiscal Year - 2014 - $16.24

Fiscal Year - 2015 - $16.64

Fiscal Year - 2016 - $16.47

Fiscal Year - 2017 - $16.12

Fiscal Year - 2018 - $16.72

Some of that increase is due to debt payment of feasibility for new school. Part of the price for increase in property values due to the building of a new school is more taxes;  again, Merry Christmas.

FY2017 average single family home value 188,867. tax bill = 3,044.58
FY2018 average single family home value 196,359. tax bill = 3,283.14
Average increase 238.56 Keep in mind that neither the school or the police station are on the tax rate yet. If you voted for a new school don't complain when you get your tax bill this year or in the future.

  2. I'm wondering about the calculations. If we are going from $16.12 to $16.72 that itself appears to be a 3.7% increase in the tax rate. Valuations are rising also as noted by Annon 8:54. who shows a 7.8% increase from 3044 to 3283.

So I have a question for those smarter than I. How does a town in MA under proposition 2 1/2 whose overall valuations as a town has increased from $597 million to $622 million justify a 3.7% increase in the tax rate?

Wait till the Elementary School, Police Station, Fire trucks, etc hit the tax rate. We should be approaching $20.00 per $1000 real soon without anything else changing.

    1. The very worse part of this picture is what we have to show FOR all it cost us is next to nothing. We have thrown away more money than I care to think about, with no end in sight.

Look at the Templeton's levy limit page https://dlsgateway.dor.state.ma.us/gateway

TO CALCULATE THE FY 2018 LEVY LIMIT
FY 2017 Levy Limit from 8,758,243
ADD Amended FY 2017 Growth 22,165
    ADD 2.5% 219,510 (8,758,243 + 22,165. =8,780,408. x 2.5%)
ADD FY 2018 New Growth 62,744
FY 2018 Subtotal 9,062,662 FY 2018 Levy Limit

TO CALCULATE THE FY 2018 MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE LEVY
FY 2018 Levy Limit from II. 9,062,662
FY 2018 Debt Exclusion(s) 1,356,308 Remember they forgot to add some of the previous years debt
FY 2018 Maximum Allowable Levy 10,418,970

$1.3 million in Debt exclusions makes the amount that can be raise by taxation go up 15.45% in addition to the 2.5% we are allowed by Prop.2 1/2.
Now the maximum allowable levy is just what can be raised not what "has" to be raised. But Templeton votes (TM) to spend.
Maximum Allowable Levy - $ 10,418,970. Tax Rate at 16.72 per 1000 will raise $10,413,951.63
excess levy capacity - $5,018.37 we don't have to raise to the maximum allowable levy, we could spend less.

The following is from Tuesday's Gardner News article. The town is also looking at ways to better recognize its staff and volunteers. A possible luncheon or cook out is proposed, as well as lapel pins and signed letters of recognition. The money would come from left over budget funds, after a portion is already taken out for employee raises.

maybe sometime the rest of the town will wake up and realize we are in deep doodoo! If you don't go to town meetings and vote then don't complain when you get your tax bill!!! Most people come into town, buy a 250,000 house and then complain that they can't afford the taxes. Wake up people!!!! this is your town, you have a say!!!!

Can't say that I blame you ! I am afraid there will be a lot of property for sale. Sell quick before you can't get anywhere close to what you want. I pray that the new people who have moved into town are prepared for the tax increase coming down the road. If not, then they are in for a rude awakening.
